Task-switching game: alternate between letter and number rules

Rule Shift changes the active decision according to stimulus position. It is based on the alternating-runs task-switching paradigm rather than a personality or diagnostic test.

01

How the task works

Apply the letter rule in one position and the number rule in the other. Each position change requires you to retrieve the newly relevant rule before responding.

02

Research connection

Rogers and Monsell measured switch costs using letter and number classifications arranged by position. Their experiments showed that preparation reduces, but does not always remove, the cost of changing task sets.

03

How to interpret your result

Your score mixes rule accuracy, reading speed, and response speed. Improvement can be specific to these cues and rules and does not establish broad cognitive flexibility.

Research sources

These papers support the task paradigm and how researchers interpret it. They do not prove that this web game diagnoses a condition or produces broad, lasting cognitive improvement.
