How to Read Your Cognitive Training Progress
Use 7-day and 30-day trends without confusing practice gains with broad cognitive change.
A faster time or a higher score is useful feedback—but it does not automatically mean that a broad cognitive ability has changed. Mind Training records practice performance: how you performed on a specific game, with a specific difficulty, under the conditions of that session.
That distinction makes the history more useful, not less. It tells you exactly what the data can support.
Start with like-for-like sessions
Compare results only when the task is reasonably similar:
- the same game;
- the same grid size, sequence length, or round count;
- the same input method and device when possible;
- similar levels of interruption and fatigue.
A 3 × 3 Schulte Grid score and a 6 × 6 score describe different workloads. Combining them into one judgment hides more than it reveals.
Read accuracy before speed
Speed is meaningful only when the task remains controlled. If completion time falls while errors rise sharply, the session may reflect a speed–accuracy trade-off rather than cleaner performance.
Use this order:
- Check whether accuracy is stable.
- Look at time or score within the same difficulty.
- Review several sessions instead of one personal best.
Personal bests are motivating. Trends are more informative.
Use each time range for a different question
The 7-day view answers: “What has my recent practice felt like?” It is sensitive to short-term changes in routine, device, and attention.
The 30-day view answers: “Is a pattern surviving beyond a few sessions?” It is better for spotting consistency, plateaus, and breaks in practice.
The all-time view provides context, but it may mix different difficulties and phases of learning. Treat it as a record, not a single verdict.
Expect practice effects
Repeated exposure usually makes a task more familiar. You learn its rules, reduce hesitation, and develop strategies. Research on repeated cognitive testing has found that early performance gains can be especially pronounced before reaching a plateau.
This is called a practice effect. It is one reason Mind Training labels charts as practice performance rather than cognitive diagnosis. Improvement is real at the task level, but the chart alone cannot show that the change transfers to unrelated activities or everyday functioning.
Look for a stable pattern
A useful positive pattern might look like this:
- accuracy stays level or improves;
- time gradually falls at the same difficulty;
- the change appears across multiple days;
- a harder setting remains manageable instead of producing a collapse in accuracy.
If results vary widely, keep the difficulty stable for a few sessions. Variation is information too: it may show that the current setting is demanding or that session conditions are inconsistent.
Know what the history cannot tell you
These games are not medical tests and are not designed to diagnose attention, memory, or neurological conditions. A score cannot be compared with a clinical norm or interpreted as an IQ measure.
If you are concerned about a meaningful change in memory, attention, or daily functioning, seek advice from a qualified health professional rather than relying on game history.
A simple review habit
After training, ask three questions:
- Was I accurate?
- Was this session comparable with recent sessions?
- What should stay the same next time: game, difficulty, or pace?
That is enough. The purpose of history is to support the next deliberate session—not to turn every result into a judgment about your brain.
